Restaurants in Cozumel

Cozumel is an island in the Caribbean Sea that lies about 7 miles off the southeast coast of Mexico.  This predominantly undeveloped tropical island is a popular port of call for cruise ships from all over the world who bring international visitors to Cozumel to enjoy the warm tropical weather and equally warm crystal clear water that has become a mecca for scuba diving and snorkeling enthusiasts.

The Mesoamerican Reef that lies just off the shore of Cozumel is one of the largest reefs in the world, second only to the Great Barrier Reef of Australia, and is home to living coral formations and a plethora of marine life that attract scuba divers and snorkeling enthusiasts from every corner of the world.
Cozumel is famous for its white sandy beaches, pleasant tropical weather and warm water temperatures that make it an ideal location for year round scuba diving and other water sport and outdoor activities.

All the amenities needed for a vacation can be found in Cozumel, including gastronomically delightful regional cuisine prepared by locals that feature a variety of menu options which include traditional Mexican and Yucatecan cuisine and a lot of fresh seafood.

Restaurants in CozumelFine dining options continue to be added in Cozumel but most eateries are as laid back as the island itself and offer casual, relaxed dining atmospheres that don’t require reservations.

Most restaurants in Cozumel are not franchised or corporate owned but are instead local family-owned entrepreneurships where multiple generations have worked in and contributed to the family’s restaurant business.

Up until a few years ago, a lot of households in the area didn’t have refrigerators or storage space for edibles so local family-owned markets sprang up to accommodate neighbors who didn’t want to travel far to get groceries and also welcomed the idea of inexpensive dining options offered by local corner market eateries instead of having to prepare every meal themselves.

Visitors to Cozumel will find at least one such eatery for every neighborhood block and a variety of meals offered by each.  Dining at these family-operated restaurants allows visitors to taste the delicious fare prepared by different households that reflect the cuisine of locals and people who relocate to the island predominantly from other parts of Mexico and prepare cuisine native to that particular area.

As tourists travel around the island they will encounter multiple family owned restaurants along the way that generally emphasize simplicity, friendly service, fresh ingredients and the assurance of a satisfying meal.  As you might expect the menus always include a variety of fresh seafood.

In addition to the local family-owned diners numerous restaurants can be found in downtown San Miguel and along the waterfront that offer a variety of menu options. Many island visitors choose the Cozumel Food Tour that takes them to a variety of local restaurants and enables them to sample menu items that represent the unique flavors and variety of ingredients that distinguish cuisines of Maya, Aztec, Spain and Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula.

Many restaurants accept major credit cards but there are also many that do not so be prepared to pay cash. Also don’t put much credence in the recommendations of cab drivers who are often paid to direct customers to a certain restaurant and whose advice cannot be trusted.

Cozumel is a Caribbean paradise for snorkeling and scuba enthusiasts whose visit will be accentuated by friendly locals who provide delectable dining options to satisfy every palate and budget.
