Thanksgiving in Cozumel
The modern Thanksgiving Day celebration that takes place annually in the United States can be traced back to Colonial New England when the newly arrived Puritans and Pilgrims began a tradition of giving thanks to God for safe passage of immigrants from England to North America and a minimally documented feast in Plymouth, Massachusetts in the fall of 1621 that was held in order to give thanks for a bountiful harvest.
Thanksgiving Day now occurs on the fourth Thursday of November and has evolved into a four-day weekend for everyone to observe the national holiday with family and friends, making it one of the busiest travel days of the year in the United States.
During and after the American Revolution, British loyalists fled the United States and resettled in Canada, bringing with them the tradition of giving thanks for a bountiful autumnal harvest. French settlers also brought celebratory traditions with them to Canada, as did folks from Ireland, Scotland and Germany, incorporating aspects of each country’s traditional entrees into the Canadian Thanksgiving Day celebratory feast, which is now officially observed on the second Monday of October every year and is a statutory holiday everywhere in Canada except New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, Newfoundland and Labrador.
Celebrants of Thanksgiving Day in the United States in November and Canada in October are modifying their traditions to include a getaway to the beautiful subtropical island of Cozumel, Mexico. Most restaurants offer these special meals, but not all participate and quantities are limited, so reservations are recommended.
